Founding Day: Widespread National Celebrations Marking the Establishment of the First Saudi State

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia witnessed widespread national celebrations across the country on the occasion of Founding Day, which falls on February 22 each year. These celebrations came to commemorate the establishment of the First Saudi State by Imam Mohammed bin Saud in 1727 CE.
In this context, Saudi Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan said: “Founding Day is a dear national occasion to our hearts, in which we recall our rich history and civilizational heritage, and express our pride and honor in what our fathers and grandfathers established of a strong and firmly-rooted state.”
The capital Riyadh and all Saudi cities witnessed diverse events celebrating this occasion, including air and naval displays, fireworks, heritage shows, folk arts, and other activities that reflected the kingdom’s heritage and rich history.
Official statistics showed wide participation from citizens in the celebrations, with attendance at various events exceeding 5 million people, while the number of posts on social media platforms using the hashtag #FoundingDay reached more than 10 million tweets.
In press statements, Saudi officials affirmed that celebrating Founding Day comes within efforts aimed at strengthening national identity and belonging to the homeland, and consolidating values of loyalty and devotion to the wise leadership.
This year’s Founding Day comes amid the exceptional circumstances the kingdom is experiencing due to the coronavirus pandemic, which prompted the relevant authorities to organize virtual and electronic celebrations in addition to field events, out of concern for citizens’ safety.
