Saudi Arabia celebrated “Founding Day” today, which falls on February 22nd each year, to commemorate the historical establishment of the first Saudi state by Imam Muhammad bin Saud in 1727 AD.

Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, Advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and Governor of the Makkah Region, affirmed that “Founding Day embodies the connection between citizens and their leaders, reflecting the deep historical roots of the Kingdom.” He added in his speech during the official celebration: “We celebrate today a day of pride and glory, the day when the state of faith and humanity was built, a state whose roots extend for three centuries of glory and prosperity.”

The official and popular celebrations included various events in all regions of the Kingdom, where streets and buildings were adorned with Saudi flags and green lights, and folkloric and artistic performances reflecting the authentic Saudi heritage were organized.

In the context of the celebrations, the Ministry of Culture indicated that “Founding Day represents an opportunity to enhance national belonging and pride in the Kingdom’s deep roots.” The ministry explained that the celebrations witnessed wide participation from citizens and residents, with more than 500 diverse events organized throughout the Kingdom.

Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan affirmed that “Founding Day reinforces national values and highlights the ancient Saudi identity.” He added in a press statement: “We celebrate today an ancient history and a civilization deeply rooted in the past, a civilization embodied in a state founded on faith, unity, and solidarity.”

The celebration of Founding Day comes within the framework of the Saudi leadership’s keenness to enhance awareness of national history and deepen belonging to the homeland. King Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, issued a royal decree in January 2022 making February 22nd of each year a day commemorating the founding of the Saudi state, called “Founding Day,” and making it an official holiday.

In conclusion, experts and analysts affirmed that celebrating Founding Day reflects the great interest the Kingdom attaches to its ancient history, and contributes to enhancing the feeling of pride and belonging among new generations, which contributes to building a more prosperous and flourishing future for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom has been keen to develop its infrastructure and public services. In 1953, the first Ministry of Oil and Mineral Resources was established, and in 1970, King Saud University was opened, becoming the first government university in the Kingdom.

In the field of education, school enrollment rates rose from only 2% at the founding of the Kingdom to more than 99% today. Life expectancy also increased from 38 years in 1950 to more than 74 years today.

On the international level, the Kingdom played a pivotal role in founding the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 1960, and in 1981, it was one of the founding countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Today, 91 years after its founding, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues its path of development and construction under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and his Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
